Facts: 2006 ECE Highlights

Undergraduate Program

  • Undergraduate enrollment—523
  • Curriculum leading to an effective integration of knowledge as demonstrated by highly praised senior design projects.
  • Department conferred 99 undergraduate degrees in 2006.
  • NSF funded Research Experience for Undergraduates in ECE.

Graduate Program

  • Implementation of a "streamlined" Ph.D. program which enables the very best of students to complete a PhD after obtaining a BS degree in four years.
  • Ph.D. enrollment on the rise (total Ph.D. enrollment in 2006 is 88, up from 59 in 2001 and 30 in 1998).
  • Department conferred 16 Ph.D. degrees in 2006.

Faculty Scholarship

  • Four major areas of research focus with national and international recognition (applied electromagnetics, nanosystems, neuroengineering, and well logging and sensor technology).
  • Outside funding resulted in core faculty expenditures of approximately $4M during the year.
  • Productive faculty (e.g., on the average 2.4 peer-reviewed journal publications per faculty per year).

General Items

  • Recent ABET Accreditation visit resulted in accreditation for both undergraduate programs in electrical and computer engineering until 2012. Computer engineering is newly accredited—the program is accredited retroactively to Oct. 1, 2004.
